Modifying Sketcher objects by automatically trimming edges

Use the Auto-trim tool from the Sketcher toolbox to delete unwanted portions of sketched edges. Edges are deleted between the two trim points closest to the cursor. The trim points include:

  • Intersections with other edges, construction geometry, or reference geometry

  • Endpoints

  • Points used to define the circumference of circles

If the endpoints are the only trim points on an edge, Abaqus/CAE deletes the entire edge.

Context:

You cannot trim a fillet; if you trim an edge that defines an endpoint of a fillet, Abaqus/CAE deletes the fillet.

  1. From the modify tools in the Sketcher toolbox, select the Auto-trim tool . For a diagram of the tools in the Sketcher toolbox, see The Sketcher tools.

Abaqus/CAE displays prompts in the prompt area to guide you through the procedure.

  2. Move the cursor over the edges in the sketch.

As you move the cursor, Abaqus/CAE highlights the section that would be removed.

  3. Click to remove the highlighted edge segment.

Unlike when you use Trim/Extend, Abaqus/CAE does not split the intersecting edges.

    Note:

If you trim a spline curve, Abaqus/CAE removes the control points to retain the exact shape of the original curve; therefore, you can no longer edit the shape of the curve.

  4. When you have finished trimming edges, do one of the following

    • Click mouse button 2 anywhere in the Abaqus/CAE window.

    • Select any tool in the Sketcher toolbox.

    • Click the cancel button in the prompt area.
