Converting to analytical

When you convert a part to its analytical representation, Abaqus/CAE tries to change the internal definition of edges, faces, and cells into a simpler form that can be represented analytically. For example, a plane that is nearly planar will be converted to an equation that represents the plane. Converting to an analytical representation usually provides the following advantages:

  • Processing of the part is faster.

  • The converted entity is available during feature operations.

  • The geometry is improved.

  • If you subsequently need to stitch edges, the stitching operation is more likely to be successful.

Context:

After the operation is complete, you can use the geometry diagnostic tools in the Query toolset to locate any areas of invalid and imprecise geometry. For more information, see Using the Query toolset in the Part module.

  1. From the main menu bar, select ToolsGeometry Edit.

    Abaqus/CAE displays the Geometry Edit dialog box.

    Tip: You can also convert to analytical using the tool, located with the edit tools in the Part module toolbox. For a diagram of the edit tools in the toolbox, see Editing techniques.

  2. From the dialog box, select the Part category and the Convert to analytical method.

  3. From the warning dialog box that appears, click OK.

    Abaqus/CAE tries to convert the part to its analytical representation.

  4. If you have finished editing the part, you should check its validity by clicking mouse button 3 on the part in the Model Tree and selecting Update validity from the menu that appears.
